I have a bad habit of worrying too much. I know God tells us not to worry.

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

On the 24th of July, when it was my turn to serve soup for our church after worship, God showed me once again that all the worry was for naught. In a pattern that rhymed with the widow who always had just enough flour and oil to nourish Elijah:

1 Kings 17:14 “For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: `The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.”

There was just enough soup of each kind that everyone who asked for soup was rewarded with their request. Everyone who wanted chocolate or lemon slice had what they sought. There was enough of gluten free and gluten full bread broken in half, that everyone found what they needed. None of our brothers and sisters would have been any the wiser that both pots were running low at the same rate. There was the perfect amount for everyone’s appetites.

Through serving morning tea I’m learning not to worry. Through the inspired actions of many hands, it all comes together somehow. Even if it doesn’t come together, Christians are so happy you tried that the effort alone puts a light filled smile on everyone’s face.

Serving brothers and sisters with morning tea is a skill I’m already using beyond and outside the Church. Often the takers aren’t quite so light filled, but the power of broken bread remains the same. You learn that while words can be misunderstood, simple soup can always nourish the soul.
