Dates for the rest of 2017:
Term 4: Wed 18th Oct to Wed 13th Dec
‘mainly music’ is a great program for mums and/or dads and preschoolers. Held on Wednesday mornings in school term time and starting at 10am, it is a half hour program of movement and music, which include different rhythms, styles of music, fine and gross motor movement. Children experiment with drums, shakers, swishy scarves and stretchy fabric. Each session includes a children’s story, and a ‘think spot’ – ideas and suggestions for parents.
One of the goals of the program is to offer ideas and skills for nurturing your kids at home, so for families who really enjoy the program, cds containing the songs we play are available at cost, and most of the instruments we use can be made at home or are readily available.
‘mainly music’ meets on Wednesdays, usually for 8 weeks of each school term:
- Arrive 9.45am to register and settle
- Program runs from approx. 10am to 10.30am, followed by morning tea
After the half-hour structured session, families are invited to stay for morning tea – water, fruit and rice crackers are provided for the children, tea, coffee and home-made goodies for the adults. When tummies are full, we get out some toys, and our morning tea space opens into a secure outdoor play area, so parents can supervise while they chat – families often stay til 11.30 or so. One of the benefits of mainly music is meeting other parents with children of similar age; over the term friendships are formed and it’s great to see parents supporting and caring for each other.
We have a terrific team – Deepthy and Katie are our current program leaders, and there are half a dozen or so lovely ladies who organise morning tea, name tags, registrations, and make families welcome – and they usually have spare arms ready to look after littlies too young to join in the program with older siblings. A few good men help us move furniture before and after the program as well.
‘mainly music’ is a Christian program, so some songs are about God, and sometimes the story or ‘think-spot’ may have a spiritual message. There are also the old favourites like Incy Wincy Spider and Row Row Row Your Boat as well, and the program is for everyone.
The fee for a term is $45, and we encourage people to retain their place by paying at the start of term – that way we can be sure we have enough instruments for everyone. But we think it’s good to be able to try before you buy – so families are welcome to come along to their first session without paying; if it’s not your cup of tea, there’s no cost; if you decide to come back, the fee for the term becomes payable. If you love it and don’t want to miss out, you can register ahead for the whole year.
We think ‘mainly music’ is such a fantastic program, we don’t want anyone to miss out because they can’t afford the fees. Talk to one of the ladies on the registration table and they’ll be able to help you out.
Once a term we have a social event, usually on a Saturday at about 5pm, so family members who are at work or at school during the week can come and enjoy the fun. To celebrate Fathers’ Day we have pies and chips – and not only dads, but granddads, uncles and friends have been known to come along too! In term 4 it’s ‘mainly Christmas’, and we sing some carols and there are usually some Christmas treats for littlies and parents too!
