Are you a Follower?

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon Called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me”, Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

You may follow people on Instagram or Pinterest, or be their friends on Facebook. Over two centuries ago, Jesus also invited people to ‘follow’ him. But the kind of ‘following’ that was involved was deeper and wider than the kind meant when we use the ‘following’ word today (especially when we’re talking about Social media). Are we still the kind of people who can ‘follow’ anyone in the same sense in which Jesus used the word and do we want to? In our culture and our time, what should it look like for us to look like to actively follow Jesus and what will happen in our lives if we do this?
